What is henna and where does it come from? Henna is a plant that grows in the North of Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. The leaves contains a reddish brown dye that's used on hair, fabric, and skin. Who uses henna? Henna has been used by many cultures over the last 5000 (some say maybe even 9000) years. Henna has been used to decorate the body for celebrations such as weddings, births, holidays and more. Henna is far more often used by women, but certainly not exclusively. Is henna sacred? While henna can be used to celebrate sacred events, it's not in and of itself sacred. You could compare it to a pine tree. Christians use a pine tree as a symbol of Christmas, a sacred holiday, but a pine tree itself is by no means a sacred item. What's the difference between henna and mehndi? Nothing! Mehndi is the Indian word for henna. Both words are used to describe the plant, the paste, and the art. Other words that mean the same are heena, mehandi, mehendi, and camphire. How does henna work? The short version is that the henna leaves contain a dye that is released when the powdered leaves are mixed into a paste. The dye molecule (Lawsone) is small enough to be absorbed by the dead cells at the surface of the skin. The stain remains until those cells are exfoliated. What else is it good for? Henna is used to dye hair, color fabric, decorate drums and much more. Henna also has medicinal uses too. Henna has antiseptic, astringent , antibacterial and antifungal properties. How do I make a henna design dark? Buy good henna. Make sure you are using an essential oil with "terping" properties in your recipe. Apply to clean skin and remove any lotion or make-up. Leave the paste on your skin 6-12 hours. Keep your body warm while the paste is on. How do I make it last longer? Try to keep the area dry for the first full day after you remove the paste. Avoid cleaning products and chlorinated water. When you swim or bathe cover the henna design with Henna Balm, lip balm, or olive oil. Reapply frequently. Do not use exfoliating scrubs, luffas or anything else intended to remove the dead surface skin. That's where the henna is! How should I store henna powder? Henna powder should be stored in an air-tight container in the freezer. The best way is to put your henna in a ziplock baggy. squeeze out as much air as possible before you seal it. Put this in another ziplock baggy. Toss it in the freezer. This should stay fresh for a year of more. How should I store henna paste? Frozen paste will keep for several months. In the refrigerator it will last about a week, or at room temperature for several days. If it's hot out your paste can lose it's ability to stain in a matter of a day. My henna turned out oragne. What did I do wrong? Nothing! Just wait a day or two. For the first few days after removing the paste henna stains are darkened by exposure to the air. The henna paste cracks and falls off before it's done. What should I do? First of all, your paste may need a little more sugar. You can also "seal" the henna in a number of ways. One way is to mix lemon juice and sugar into a syrup and dab it gently on the henna as soon as it's dry. Another way is to spray the henna paste with hair gell as soon as it's dry. Once "sealed" you can wrap the henna to make it even more secure. You can wrap with bathroom tissue, or an ace bandage. My henna never dries. What's wrong? Most likely you have too much sugar in your paste. On humid days you may need far less sugar in your mix. Dry weather will call for more. Is WalMart Tea Tree Oil good enough for terping? In short yes. Tea Tree Oil is heavily regulated by the Australian government, so poor quality oil can never even leave the country. So, compaired to other oils, you don't have to worry much about the quality. As far as the price is concerned, the more you buy, the lower the price per unit. Clearly, Walmart can buy more at a time than just about anybody so their prices are low. Anyone con get Tea Tree oil for about $1 an ounce, as long as you are willing to buy 16 ounces. Even less if you buy a gallon! Do you have a henna related question that was not answered here? If so please email it to me | ||||
